Background and Mission Statement

As one of the student organizations with the largest number of regular attendees at TJHSST, Medical Society takes pride in the fact that it is able to foster interest in the field of medicine through its regular meetings. In the years since its creation, TJ Medical Society has increased its activity selection to include guest speakers, organ dissections, mock diagnostic activities, as well as after-school excursions to see medicine-related topics ranging from the Bodies Exhibition to open heart surgery at INOVA Fairfax hospital, all as supplements to the typical educational lectures and scholarly article discussions. The club is completely autonomous, being run by students and funded by donations and grants from within the TJ community.

Additionally, TJ Medical Society is, in its own right, a service organization, whose members regularly perform volunteer work at hospitals such as INOVA, and on behalf of charitable foundations such as the American Red Cross, CrossLinks, St. Jude’s Hospital, etc. Others have taken the initiative to raise thousands of dollars on their own for relief efforts following the recent disasters involving a 7.9 magnitude earthquake in Sichuan, and an equally devastating hurricane (Nargis) in Myanmar.

Many of the activities in which the TJ Medical Society is involved are unique and serve as a primary source for personal and hands-on experience which is lacked in the formal education of many students. Through our efforts, we seek not only to make an impact upon those in times of crisis around the world, but also to prepare students for the future by providing enrichment which is informative, interactive, and entertaining, and a forum for discussion about topics pertaining to the medical field.

As a fellow member of TJ Medical Society, the club and organization as a whole believes in the betterment of TJ and the surrounding community. Doing so allows for the preparation of future scientists, doctors, and citizens that will in turn help help shape the world into a better place. Promulgation and proliferation of ideas such as volunteering, discussing and debating medical topics, and “taking initiative” will allow these students to be future citizens of society that have an opinion [in society] (i.e. educated citizens). I believe that Medical Society in an integral part of TJ and that the club is a club that in the future be very important…

As more and more medical problems are discovered, remedies must be discovered to combat them. This will become increasingly important in the future, becoming the jumping point for future doctors and nurses.

Hey guys sorry for the late comment. But under “Background and Mission Statement,” for future reference, any comments on what you would like to see in next year’s Medical Society would also be appreciated. :)

Learning about medicine is an integral part of gaining knowledge in the subject area of biology, as one of the most important goals in the field is improving human lives throughout the world. The major medical advancements of the recent past have demonstrated the powerful ability of humans to overcome the natural boundaries limiting populations, and the capacity to push forward into realms that, until very recently, seemed inaccessible. However, as we move into these new fields of study the need for knowledgable and experienced scientists will grow rapidly in order to accomodate constantly expanding research posibilities. Clearly the TJ Medical Society is ready to meet the challenge by providing indepth and insightful medical opportunities to its members.

By expanding into the community, the TJ Medical Society shows its keen awareness that providing opportunities to others outside of TJ can be just as important as supplying opportunities to TJ students through the club’s 8th period meetings.

Well done and continue the great work!

Medical Society is great. I attend whenever I can! Is there anything planned for the summer?

Having visited a number of Eighth Period activities over the past two years, I must say that TJ Medical Society is one of the fastest-growing, dynamic, and enthusiastic clubs I have ever been a part of. Experiences at this club have ranged from challenging Problem-based learning activities to extremely well-established guest speakers from the Northern Virginia area; this club has even had an impact beyond the Jefferson community through extensive member-driven volunteer work with the aforementioned organizations (American Red Cross, CrossLinks International, and St. Jude’s Hospital to name a few), and breathtaking firsthand accounts of medical procedures at local hospitals. Not only are the officer corps, who are elected annually and organize such activities, extremely motivated, but the entire club, including the sponsors and members, is a congregation of arguably the school’s most dedicated students.
I would very much like to see this club soon have the capability and the facilities to spread its influence to other high schools and have a profound impact on those that choose to become involved, just as it has already done to the students of TJHSST.

While I feel that Medical Society sometimes becomes overcrowded, I do appreciate the club’s efforts to diversify its activities and improve upon its membership. Keep up the good work!

To add upon that, is there any way I could be added to the mailing list as I have not been receiving updates over the past year, and I would like to receive information about opportunities for leadership or service-work which may open up in the near future.
