Medical Society Constitution

Article I – Name
1.1 The name of this club shall be the Medical Society of the Thomas Jefferson High School
for Science and Technology.

Article II – Objectives
General objectives of this club shall be:
2.1 To educate and inform the Thomas Jefferson Community on a variety of topics relating to
medicine and the medical field.
2.2 To promote the interest of individuals interested in pursuing a career in medicine.
2.3 To assist in and organize events that provides information pertaining to the medical field.

Article III – Activities
3.1 The activities of this club shall be in accord with its objectives. General activities
include, but are not limited to, the activities in the upcoming sections.
3.2 Meeting biweekly (Alternating Wednesday A Blocks of 8th period) to hold general
meetings and involve club members in activities relating to health, medicine and the
medical field.
3.3 Inviting trained professionals from the medical field to give presentations and lectures
3.4 Visiting places such as museums and hospitals to further our experiences in the medical
field

Article IV – Officers
4.1 Officer positions of the Medical Society shall consist of two (2) Co-Presidents, Secretary,
and Treasurer.
4.2 The co-presidents are responsible for meeting with the sponsor and discussing plans for
the club, arranging field trips, monitoring and setting the club agenda, and running
general meetings.
4.3 The secretary is responsible for keeping track of attendance, club progress, deadlines, and
organizing logistics of club events. He or she must keep an updated list of members and
also maintain contact with members with continuous emails.
4.4 The treasurer is responsible for all financial expenditures and obligations of the club, as
well as fund-raising and serving as a liaison to the finance office.
4.5 All officers are responsible for advertising club events and for recruiting new members.
4.6 All officers are required to attend at least one block eighty percent of the time.
4.7 Each officer shall serve for one year and may be re-elected.

Article V – Elections
5.1 The officers shall be chosen each spring at a general meeting with due announcement
given beforehand.
5.2 Anyone running for office must have attended at least one half of the meetings for the
year in order to be eligible. He or she must also attend an officer meeting at lunch.
5.3 Only club members may vote. See Article VIII.
5.4 One co-president and the secretary will be elected by majority vote of members present
on the specified voting date. The other co-president and the treasurer are determined by
application. Applications will be submitted, with due announcement of the process ahead
of time, to a committee of senior members and any senior officers. Selection of this
committee will be based on membership. They will then appoint the officers for the
following year.
5.5 A member may submit a request for impeachment of an officer with the signatures of
one-third of club members to the sponsor. A reason must be included for this action. The
club will vote on the matter at a general meeting. It shall take two-thirds vote to remove
an officer.
5.6 If the secretary or treasurer resigns or is impeached, a majority vote will be taken to
determine a replacement for that position. If one of the co-presidents resigns or is
impeached, the secretary will assume the position of co-president and a replacement
officer will be elected. If a second co-president resigns or is impeached, the treasurer will
assume the position of co-president and a new treasurer will be elected. If further
resignations occur, the process will repeat.

Article VI – Sponsor
6.1 A sponsor is assigned as part of the 8th period program at TJHSST.
6.2 In the event that an incumbent sponsor is no longer able to act as the club sponsor, the
members shall select a new sponsor to be approved by the Student Activities Coordinator.
6.3 The sponsor shall interpret the school rules and regulations to the organization and shall
be the principal’s representative to the organization.
6.4 The sponsor shall have veto power over actions of the organization. If the officers of the
organization disagree with the veto they can appeal in writing to the Student Activities
Coordinator for instruction furnishing a copy of the appeal to the faculty advisor.

Article VII – Meetings
7.1 The club shall hold officer meetings as the sponsor and/or president see fit.
7.2 General meetings will be held biweekly, on Wednesday A Blocks of 8th period.
7.3 Attendance of meetings is encouraged, but not required. Officers must attend eighty
percent of all meetings.

Article VIII – Membership and Dues
8.1 Any student Grades 9-12 that attends Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and
Technology may be a member of the Medical Society.
8.2 A student is a certified club member when they have attended 5 meetings.
8.3 To remain a certified club member, a student must attend at least one block fifty percent
of the time.
8.4 No application is necessary to become a certified club member.
8.5 There are no required dues in order to be a member of the Medical Society, but the
sponsor and officers reserve the right to call for them from certified members if they
deem that they are necessary.

Article IX – Ratification and Amendment
9.1 This constitution must be ratified by two-thirds of the club membership present at a duly
announced meeting.
9.2 Any amendment to this constitution must be proposed, in writing, at a general meeting, at
least one week before any voting takes place.
9.3 Amendments may be made to this constitution with a two-thirds vote of the club
membership present at a duly announced meeting and approval from the sponsor.
9.4 This constitution shall be valid and operative from year to year.
